30th annual IJSBA World Finals
Lake Havasu City, Arizona – October 1-9, 2011
Chris Macclugage of Macc Racing capped off a very successful year in 2011 recently at the 30th Annual IJSBA World Finals!
Here is how he completed half the mission as we lay out the details of his championship winning weekend atop his Macc Racing/ Monster Energy powered watercraft in Pro R/A Stock & Pro Ski GP!
Chris was coming off of a great year on the UWP National tour by claiming 2 more National Titles in Pro Ski GP & Pro-am R/A Stock. He was looking to keep the winning going and complete “The Mission” he was on to claim #15 & #16 World Championships, Here is a look into how it all went down this year.
Leading up to the IJSBA World Finals This year Chris was very focused on what he was after and it showed in his training as well as his work ethics. Chris knew that it wasn’t going to be easy to win the championships he so badly wanted. The passion he has for winning is undeniable and he had that look and swagger about him that told you that he wouldn’t be stopped in accomplishing as many goals as possible.
The Week of The Finals Chris had sold his Tour R/A to Pancho Marjak and he had already had a brand new Yamaha FZR in the waiting for Dean Charrier of Deans Team to work his magic on it. He also had sold his tour Bullett Skis to customers and had two more in the waiting with fresh engines and new graphics for the 30th annual world finals as he decided to go a little retro as was the theme for the World Finals this year. The skis looked awesome and so did he on them as he does on virtually everything he rides. The Open Ski’s were set and ready to go with a few minor tweaks needed here and there. The FZR was awaiting Dean’s signal to begin the transformation into the Rocketship that Chris desired.
On Thursday afternoon the FZR was having the engine completed and wrapped up with Chris & Dean being ready to test it they headed to Body Beach to test it out…When Chris rode it he immediately felt that it wasn’t what he was after and he knew that in order to win with that FZR they needed to make some changes, AND FAST! Dean immediately went to work making phone calls and headed back to the pit to get to work. Dean worked thru the day and into the night to complete the changes as they knew time was of the essence because qualifying was Friday morning.
Friday morning came very fast and dean hoped he had what Chris was after..Chris went out to test the ski…in PRACTICE. When Chris came back in he pretty much just gave Dean a slight smile and looked as if to say “LETS RACE!”
Qualifying time came and Chris didn’t have the best start but knew that all he needed to do was qualify and there was no real reason to push it. Qualify he did and was primed and ready for the next 2 moto’s. The field was filled with some riders that had very fast skis but didn’t really belong in the Pro-Am class but with the way the rules are it allows for Novice/Amatuers to be able to race with the Pro caliber riders which makes for some sketchy racing situations.
Moto 1 saw “Cap’n Holeshot” Cody Hawkins take the lead and go on to increase it each lap until the end when Chris would pour it all on and creep up to Cody fairly quickly. Cody knew Chris was lurking and was approaching very fast. On the Final Lap Cody went to the outside which Cody was able to glance to the inside and see Chris…Chris saw this as he went inside and when Cody tried to stay clean he missed a buoy which gave Chris the “Go ahead” opportunity he wanted and went on to take the lead and the eventual win on that final lap. It was a great race by both riders!
Moto 2 was interesting as it saw Cody being called for other missed buoys and was subsequently docked for it and that put him out of the running for a world title. Chris would pull a monstrous holeshot on the outside and Cody would eventually have an engine failure and pull off the track. As Cody was being towed in he showed great respect and sportsmanship as he stood up on his Sea-Doo RXPX and cheered Chris on as he went by! Chris would put it on cruise control and roll on home to the checkered flag for his 15th World Championship and 1st in Pro-Am R/A Stock aboard his Macc Racing/Deans Team Monster Energy Yamaha FZR!! Great Job Chris and congratulations on #15!!!
Pancho Marjak would finish in 3rd place atop a Macc Racing prepared Stock Yamaha and in fact it was the tour FZR that Chris won the National Championship with.
He wasn’t finished there as he was ready to go for the $30,000.00 Prize that was up for grabs in Pro Ski Open. In order to win the 30g’s one had to win all 3 moto’s and be the fastest qualifier. This was a feat that was NOT easily attainable as everyone found out. On Saturday when the 1st qualifier took off there was something unsettling already by watching Chris, He rode very well but his crew could tell something was wrong and wrong it was, at some point during the qualifier a piece of weight had come undone in the nose area and lodged itself in between the handle pole and bottom bracket causing the handle pole to only be raised half way. Chris pretty much ran the whole qualifier this way. He still Qualified 2nd and felt comfortable going into moto 1 as he had been in worse situations before. Knowing that he was out of the running for the 30 grand he was able to focus even more on winning that 16th world title.
Sunday was the final day of racing and it was eerily calm conditions which The Macc Racing Crew had hoped it was a little rougher as it was the year before. This was not going to be the case all day and calm conditions were in store. Moto 1 was on the line and Chris would not get a real good start as he would have to battle thru the pack and finish 5th with an outstanding ride. Moto 2 was a lot of the same and he would finish with a 4th. These finishes set the stage for a do or die situation and moto 3 was ready to go after a quick refill of fuel and a quick check by his team. He was ready and Chris had a better start this time but would see himself stuck mid pack with a lot of work to do, with 3 laps to go Chris put on a tremendous charge and unfortunately would see himself not finish due to engine failure and his hopes for that 16th World Championship slipped away. This was very unfortunate as Chris was putting on a display of riding some had never seen before and it was fun to watch! Chris you did an excellent job and you were the talk of the finals on Sunday with your riding you displayed! You put on one hell of a show.
On a side note 2 Macc Racing prepared Ski’s in Pro Ski Open would win the 1st and 3rd Motos with Vincent Villat finishing 1st on moto 1 and Tiago Sousa would finish 1st in Moto 3. Nice job to everyone!
